The Felicians
were founded by Blessed Mary Angela (then called Sophia Truszkowska)
in Poland in 1855. While she began her work among the orphaned children
in Warsaw, Blessed Mary Angela
and her followers quickly adopted the approach we still follow today:
prayer linked with direct service.
The Felicians came to America in 1874, arriving in Pennsylvania
in 1888. In 1921, we officially founded Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
Province, and our convent opened in Coraopolis in 1932. From that
point on, we have grown our ministries,
in the Pittsburgh region and around the world. Our international
Web site offers a glimpse at the congregation's complete history.
In 2001, we undertook a major renovation of the original provincial
house building, which now includes Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
High School. In choosing a "green," environmentally
friendly design, we reaffirmed our commitment to a future in
the area and to our Franciscan value of the integrity of creation.
